A Hot, Humid, Stormy Season

Across the twelve weeks from the start of May to late July, Islamabad worked through the full arc of its pre-monsoon and monsoon character: heat that built steadily into June, air that grew heavier and more humid as the season advanced, and in July the sudden, violent convective storms that define the peak of the wet season. The picture below is drawn entirely from one-minute observations logged by three WeatherWalay automatic weather stations Bahria Enclave, NUST University and G-8/2 between 1 May and 27 July 2026.

Heat that peaked in June

The season warmed on a clear trajectory. Network-average temperature rose from 28.3°C in May to 30.2°C in June before easing slightly to 29.9°C in July as monsoon cloud and rain began to temper the afternoons. June was the hottest month of the three and also the driest a combination that pushed daytime maxima to their seasonal ceiling. The NUST University station recorded the period's single highest reading of 42.2°C on 10 June. Day-to-day swings stayed wide throughout, with June alone spanning 18°C to 42°C: cool, comfortable mornings giving way to punishing afternoons.

A humid, muggy season

Heat was only half the story. Averaged across the NUST and G-8/2 sensors, relative humidity held at 57% for the period the close, muggy conditions typical of Islamabad's pre-monsoon and monsoon months. Humidity of this kind matters as much as the raw temperature: it slows the body's ability to cool by evaporation, so a 40°C afternoon in a humid airmass feels considerably more oppressive than the same figure in dry heat. It is also the fuel that convective storms draw on when they finally break.

Air that stayed clean

Against the heat and humidity, air quality was a consistent bright spot. Ninety-nine per cent of readings across the network rated as “Good,” with only brief, isolated spikes during dust events and the gust fronts of passing storms. For a large urban area in mid-summer that is a strong record, reflecting the washout effect that repeated rain and active mixing tend to have on particulate levels.

The July turn rain, and the storm of 12th

If June belonged to the heat, July belonged to the storms. The month brought the season's heaviest rain and, with it, its most violent gust. During the severe convective storm that crossed the city in the early hours of 12 July, the Bahria Enclave station registered a peak wind gust of 112.7 km/h comfortably the strongest reading of the entire period, and a value consistent with the localized, destructive downbursts that mature thunderstorm cells can produce. That single event, concentrated in the southeast of the city, accounted for the season's wind extreme on its own.

The season in one line

June ran hottest and driest; July delivered the heaviest rain and the most violent storm gust, on the 12th. Between them, the two months trace the familiar hand-off from pre-monsoon heat to monsoon instability a hot, humid, and, in its final act, decidedly stormy season.
