Islamabad has officially made its transition into autumn. Following a distinct nine-day spell of precipitation that broke the late-summer heatwave, daytime temperatures have tumbled, evening breezes have turned crisp, and sunset times are steadily pulling back. Here is a detailed breakdown of what the weather data shows, how the climate has shifted over the past fortnight, and what residents should prepare for in the week ahead.

The Temperature Breakdown: Breaking the Heat

For the first five days of October, Islamabad experienced typical early-autumn warmth, holding steady at afternoon highs of 31–32°C under dry, unyielding skies. However, a significant rain spell commencing on 6 October abruptly broke that run.

Over the ten days following the rains, daily maximum temperatures plummeted by 8.1°C dropping from 32.2°C on 5 October down to 24.1°C by 15 October. Daytime highs have consistently stayed below 30°C ever since.

Night Lows Cooling Faster Than Days

While afternoons have cooled substantially, night-time temperatures are dropping even faster. From a warm low of 22.6°C on 5 October, nightly temperatures fell to 15.7°C by 16 October a rapid 6.9°C decline in just eleven days. Minimum temperatures are expected to stabilize between 16°C and 18°C through 24 October, establishing a prominent day-night thermal gap of roughly 12°C. This widening diurnal shift is the clearest indicator that autumn has settled over the federal capital.

Precipitation and Shortening Days

The transitional weather was driven entirely by a wet streak mid-month. October opened completely dry, but between 6 and 14 October, Islamabad logged 7 rain days out of 9, accumulating a total of 29.3 mm of precipitation. The wettest single day occurred on 7 October with 6.6 mm of rainfall. Relative humidity reached a monthly peak of 83% on 11 October, as cloud cover and damp ground combined to keep oppressive ambient heat at bay.

Practical Takeaways for Residents

  • Commutes & School Runs: With morning temperatures near 16°C and afternoon peaks close to 28°C, a light jacket or single layer is ideal to stay comfortable throughout the day.
  • Dengue Prevention & Vector Control: Recent persistent rains left behind standing water across multiple sectors. It is critical to inspect and drain stagnant pools within a week before Aedes mosquito larvae fully mature.
  • Margalla Hills Hiking & Outdoors: Expect firm trail footing and ideal mild weather. Plan hikes early in the morning and aim to descend prior to dusk (5:24–5:34 PM).
  • Air Quality & Dryness: With relative humidity dropping to 47%, anticipate drier skin conditions and increased road dust. Moisturizing and staying hydrated is recommended.
  • Energy Efficiency: Afternoon highs below 30°C mean most households and commercial offices can turn off air conditioning systems, significantly reducing power consumption.
