What seventeen days of minute-by-minute data from a single Islamabad station reveal about a monsoon that only rains after dark.

It barely rains in daylight

For the first seventeen days of August, an automated station on the NUST campus recorded the weather every single minute close to 24,000 readings. Buried in that record is a pattern almost nobody notices while it is happening: this monsoon barely rains in daylight at all.

Of the 365.6 mm that fell across the period, 87% arrived between midnight and six in the morning. Daytime managed barely a tenth of the total. The storms come while the city sleeps and are gone by breakfast.

Why the storms wait until dark

Through the afternoon, humid monsoon air humidity near 80%, dew points around 25°C quietly loads the atmosphere with moisture. Nothing much happens yet.

After sunset the land cools, the air aloft turns unstable, and low-level winds pile up against the Margalla foothills. Somewhere between one and four in the morning, that stored energy releases as deep convection. The storms mature, unload, and dissolve by dawn.

What it means for you

The practical lesson is simple, and slightly unsettling: in this monsoon, a calm sunrise says nothing about the night ahead. The real weather keeps unsociable hours and only a station that never blinks will catch it.
